Forbes: Bioceanic Corridor: the strategic and competitive route that will bring Paraguay closer to the Asian market
Naoki Nagaoka, president of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paraguay, stated that the Bioceanic Corridor will be a strategic route that will bring our country closer to the Asian market. He indicated that it is extremely important for logistics, given that it will reduce transit times.
Without a doubt, the opening of the Bioceanic Corridor will mark a turning point in the country's logistics system and international trade in general, as it will not only allow Paraguay to access the most important ports in the region, but also to the most distant markets in the world.
Naoki Nagaoka, president of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Paraguay, indicated that it is a strategic project for the country, considering that more than 80% of Paraguay's exports travel through the Río de la Plata by river to reach Asian markets. The transit, he mentioned, from Asunción, Paraguay, to Asian ports can take between 40 and 45 days; however, once access to the Pacific is established, this could be reduced to just 15 days.
It would be reduced to less than half—practically a third—which would make our trade, what we can offer, much more competitive from a logistics standpoint," he stated.
While he believes logistics costs will not decrease due to the distance traveled between the two continents, he indicated that transit and reduced delivery times are a key issue for those who receive exported products, given that many of them are industries that then process them.
He mentioned that these companies require products with significant delivery accuracy, because factories need raw materials. Nagaoka commented that the Bioceanic Corridor would not only enable all products that can be exported to Asia, but would also represent a significant opening for the entire market in southern Brazil and northern Argentina, where everything that passes through the country will be a source of progress for Paraguay.
"We estimate that Paraguay could become a logistics hub in the future, since we are located at the center of this Bioceanic Corridor, and it could be a very interesting opportunity," he stated. Opportunities for Trade The head of the Chamber said they understand that there are many opportunities, given that Paraguay is an agricultural country, primarily a producer of food, which is a strategic product, that is, a strategic material for any country.
In the case of Japan, which depends heavily on the import of these types of products, they believe that our country can become a strategic point for continuous food supply. He stated that chia, sesame, and other products are currently being exported, while at the same time work is being done to open the market for meat.
In 2023, Paraguay's exports to Japan increased by 215.6% compared to the previous year, reaching US$49.9 million. The main products exported were oilseeds, corn, and soybean meal. Imports from Japan, meanwhile, grew by 9.2%, totaling US$268 million.
